Foreign Creature is a classic point-and-click puzzle game that follows
the same formulas as other titles in this genre. The artwork is done
pretty well. It is consistent and clear. It is not confusing or
cluttered with insignificant details. There is some well-done music in
the game to back up the creepy mood being created. The sound effects
are adequate enough considering they do not factor heavily into
gameplay. The overall production value is much higher than some other
games in this field.
The goal in Foreign Creature is to assist the alien main character in
eating, growing strong and potentially dominating the world. The exact
story is not really revealed. The creature appears to be either a lab
experiment or a captured alien. You interact with the game exclusively
through mouse clicks. Each click is contextual. This means you never
really know what is going to happen until you click. You might turn on a
faucet with one click and rip apart a sign with the next. One
interesting thing to note is that you appear to be a separate entity
from the foreign creature. This means you can do things that the
creature cannot. It makes some puzzles less interesting.
You start out in a lab with the creature locked in a cage trap. The first
puzzle is simple to solve and involves just a few clicks. The
complexity goes up as you progress. You must also start to deal with
threats that are not static such as traffic, security guards and
aggressive dogs. Fortunately, little of the game is reliant on timing.
Completing each level will take you to the next one. The backgrounds
and environments are sufficiently varied to keep things interesting
until the end. Unfortunately, there are only nine levels in this
installment of the game.
The only issue with Foreign Creature is one that plagues some other
titles in the genre. You are not actually going to figure out the
puzzles with your wit and creativity. You are mostly just going to keep
clicking until things start to happen. You learn the order through
trial and error. This takes a little of the fun out of the game. You
do not have an inventory or anything consistent between screens. The
foreign creature even changes in abilities over the course of the game.
Foreign Creature is one of the better point-and-click puzzle titles because it does not have completely random puzzles. It is worth checking out.
