Katana Fruits: A mobile game with a simple arcade premise

The game has a very basic design and a clean interface not cluttered with menus or other items. The graphics in Katana Fruits are what most people would expect from a game for Apple iOS and other mobile devices. They are well done, bright and clear. The background image does not interfere with the moving pieces of fruit. A simple Asian inspired theme song plays on a loop after the game starts. The sound effects for the katana and bombs are satisfying.

The goal in Katana Fruits is very straightforward. You are supposed to cut pieces of fruit in half with your sword. You do not actually see your sword on screen. You have one basic control in the game. You swipe your finger across the screen to swing the katana. This causes a white slash mark or line to appear along the exact trail of your finger. You need to swing directly through the pieces of fruit that appear constantly on the screen. Cutting a piece of fruit causes it to break into two pieces and fall away. You get points for each piece of fruit you successfully hit. If a single slash hits multiple pieces of fruit, then you get extra points for a combo.

The game is complicated by a few different things. The first is that the fruit flies up from the bottom of the screen at different speeds. It hovers for a second on the screen then falls back down again. You have to slice the fruit during this period. You are allowed to miss only three pieces of fruit. If you do miss three, then the game ends instantly and you have to start over. Bombs are another obstacle. Bombs appear just like fruit. If you accidentally slice through a bomb, then it explodes and the game ends.

Katana Fruits gets progressively more difficult as you continue to play. Larger numbers of fruit start appearing at once. Bombs begin to shadow fruit forcing you to be very precise. The only goal in the game is to get the highest score possible. You do not go through levels. One notable issue with Katana Fruits is that there seem to be some hit detection issues especially when fruit is near the edge of the screen. This can be frustrating because your Japanese sword slice simply will not register on occasion even though it clearly shows the line crosses through the fruit. Katana Fruits is a fun arcade game that children and adults can enjoy.
