Pilot Heroes: A fun-addicting mobile game with planes

Pilot Heroes is a fun game for mobile devices that puts you in control of a plane. The graphics are bright and interesting at every turn. The scenery on the levels is detailed and has a consistent appearance. The graphics at the startup and level screens are fun while also relaying a little about what will come next. Animations and scrolling are both seamless and smooth. A happy soundtrack plays in the background while you are flying that matches the lighthearted nature of the game. The sound effects are good although they are a little generic.

You are a pilot in this game behind the controls of several types of aircraft. These are all mostly fictional aircraft that are depicted with faces on the screens between levels. You control the planes by tapping on one side of the screen or the other. Your current plane will bank in the direction that you tap. You can also hold down and drag your finger right or left across the screen. The controls are actually a little sluggish and your plane turns slowly. This is probably by design to make the game more challenging.

Your goal in Pilot Heroes is to complete as many missions as possible and to achieve the highest level. You can collect colored gems on the different levels. You can pick them up or get them as a reward for completing mission tasks. Gems act like experience points and increase your level. It is not really made clear what benefit there is in leveling up beyond acting like a score counter.

The missions are varied and fun. You might have to fly though rings in one mission, put out fires in another and rescue survivors in the next. Some levels just involve collecting gems, avoiding trees or steering clear of wind turbines. Each mission is actually incredibly short. You can usually finish in under a minute or two. You are graded on your performance when the mission ends. You have a cumulative average rating that this contributes to on your stats screen.

There are only a few minor issues with Pilot Heroes. One is that the hit detection is very unforgiving. Only the nose of your plane will pick up items although your wings will easily slam into any obstacles. Another issue is that leveling up feels pointless since you do not seem to get more powerful and cannot buy upgrades with the gems. Pilot Heroes is an exceptionally fun game that will hold your interest for some time.
